THE David Livingstone Bicentenary 2013 Committee says descendants of the Scottish missionary will be in the country to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth.

The missionary and explorer was born on March 19, 1813.

In memory of the Scottish missionary and explorer - and the first white man to see the Victoria Falls - the Bicentenary Committee will hold various programmes in Livingstone from March to November 2013.

Speaking to journalists after a memorial service, Bicentenary Committee secretary and UK liaison officer Belinda Hodge said the International History department at the London School of Economics (LSE) and the Livingstone Museum would host an international academic conference in the tourist capital to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of David Livingstone.

"David Livingstone's descendants will be here in June to commemorate the 200th year of the birth of David Livingstone. An academic conference on David Livingstone will also be held from April 19th to April 21st. And we will also have an international cultural festival among other things," Hodge said.

She said during this period, Livingstone as the tourist capital would be a focus for most tourists because a lot of people had an interest in David Livingstone.

Hodge said several publications in the United Kingdom were also planning to start promoting Livingstone and David Livingstone's birthday celebrations as a "must-see" destination for this year.

David Livingstone's birthday celebrations in Livingstone have also been included in the National Geographic Traveller 2013 Hot List as one of the "must-see" for 2013.
